Background

TOCH (The Organisation for Children’s Harmony) is a South Sudanese national non-governmental organisation (NGO) that has been working since 2008 to protect children’s rights, support communities affected by conflict, and promote peace. It was established by a group of concerned young people in response to the rise in inter-communal violence, especially in the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region. The aim was simple: to build peaceful, resilient communities where children can grow up safe, healthy, and hopeful for the future.

TOCH’s mission is to empower grassroots communities to protect children’s rights and resolve conflict peacefully and sustainably. Their work puts communities at the centre, and all their programming is based on a strong commitment to human rights, gender equality, transparency, and non-violence.

Over the years, TOCH has grown. They now have offices in Warrap, Lakes, Northern and Western Bahr el Ghazal, Central Equatoria, and Abyei Administrative Area, with their headquarters in Juba. TOCH runs both humanitarian and development programmes, often in hard-to-reach and conflict-affected areas.

TOCH’s work focuses on six interconnected areas that support communities across South Sudan. They provide child protection and support for survivors of gender-based violence, promote peace and inclusive governance through local dialogue and conflict resolution, and expand access to education—especially for girls and pastoralist children—through formal and vocational training. Their food security and livelihoods programmes help families recover from crises with seeds, tools, and training, while their health and nutrition work improves access to maternal care and preventive services. Finally, TOCH supports safe water, sanitation, and hygiene practices to reduce disease and promote healthier living conditions.

TOCH has worked in partnership with many international agencies, including UNICEF, Save the Children, UNFPA, FAO, ADRA, Saferworld, and World Vision. With over 30 staff and dozens of volunteers, TOCH combines local knowledge with strong technical expertise to reach those most in need.

If you’d like to support Peace Canal’s work, they have a live fundraising campaign to raise funds for a new peace centre and offices. You can find out more and donate on their crowdsourcing site.
